H.S. roundup: Waterford baseball bounces back and beats East Lyme

May 19—EAST LYME — Waterford jumped out to an early lead with four runs in the second inning and then held off East Lyme, 6-4, in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I baseball game on Tuesday.

A day after the No. 3 Lancers (14-1, 12-1) suffered their first loss of the season, Connor Podeszwa earned the victory, allowing two hits and striking out 10 in five innings, while Connor Rowe had two hits and an RBI and Will Rocchetti chipped in a single and double.

John Bureau and Aidan Ellis each had a hit and RBI for the Vikings (7-5, 7-5).

In other games:

— Ryan Deshefy's double scored Sebastian Herbert with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning, lifting Norwich Free Academy past Stonington, 8-7, in ECC Division I. Mason Bordeau went 3-for-3 with an RBI and winning pitcher Zach Ruta went 2.2 innings for the Wildcats (10-5, 9-5). Nicholas Abely had two hits and two RBI for the Bears (0-14, 0-14).

— Dylan Meyer pitched a one-hitter and struck out nine as Fitch beat New London 10-0 in a five-inning game. Alex DelCampo was 3-for-4 with two doubles for the Falcons (10-4) while Cam McGugan was 2-for-2 with two doubles and three RBI, Tate Scherer had a double and three RBI and Anthony Franco was 2-for-2 with two RBI. Anthony Rivera had the lone hit for the Whalers (4-12).

— Killingly improved to 15-2 overall with a 7-3 win over Lyman Memorial in an ECC Division II game. Jared Russo had two hits and two RBI for Lyman (7-8, 7-8) and Mike Incontro added a pair of hits.

H.S. boys' tennis

— Stonington improved to 10-2 overall with a 5-2 victory over Montville. Tucker Callahan, Matthew Turrisi, Jackson Conlon and Chase Williams won singles matches for the Bears. Marshall Thibodeau and Ben Mahoney won at No. 3 doubles for the Indians (8-2), who also received a doubles win from Owen Grant and Peter Previty.

— Fitch defeated Woodstock, 6-1, receiving singles victories from Ian Straub, Andres Sardar and Morgan Fisher. The doubles duos of Aidan McLean-Timmy Lynch, Michael McBride-Ryan Mignosa and Charlie Cartier-Calvin Lupo also were victories for the Falcons (8-4).

H.S. boys' track

— Justin Thuotte finished first in the long jump and triple jump to pace Lyman Memorial over Montville, 125-20, in an ECC Division III meet. Nicholas Barrett won the 100 and 200 while Brandon Judd took first in the javelin and discus for the Bulldogs (4-2-1, 4-0-1). Zach Handler won the 800 and Stephen Duhamel won the 1,600 for the Indians (1-8, 1-4).

— Gabe Lavoie took first in the long jump in 16-2.5 and 200 meters in 23.4, pacing Old Lyme past Morgan, 94-46, in the Shoreline Conference. Eli Ryan (triple jump, high jump) and Dylan Sheehan (shot put, discus) also were double winners while Nevin Joshy won the 100 in 11.36, Aidan Powers won the 400 in 52.0 and Dylan Hovey won the 800 in 2:19 for the Wildcats (3-2, 3-2).

H.S. girls' track

— Emma Boardman won the javelin with a throw of 82-4 and shot put in 20-4, helping Old Lyme beat Morgan, 95-39, in the Shoreline Conference. Other individual winners for the Wildcats (3-2, 3-2) included Bella Hine (discus, 56-9), Maggie Rommel (high jump, 4-10), Isabelle O'Connor (triple jump, 26-7), Emmerson Kaye (long jump, 13-0), Phia Adkins (3,200), Kelly Walsh (800, 3:11), Emily DeRoehn (200, 28.06), Anne Colangelo (300 hurdles, 59.0) and Maddy Morgado (1,600, 5:49).

H.S. boys' golf

— Nathan Sylvestre shot a team-low 51 for Grasso Tech in a 193-240 loss to Wilcox Tech at Hunter Golf Course. The Eagles fell to 4-7 overall and in the Connecticut Technical Conference.

— Norwich Tech beat Wolcott Tech, 211-234, in a CTC match at Norwich Golf Course, with Joshua Lavender shooting a 46 and Joshua James a 52 for the Warriors (7-3, 7-3).

— Ryan Fasula won his No. 5 match for Griswold, but the Wolverines dropped a 5.5-1.5 decision to Killingly in an ECC Division II match at River Ridge Golf Course. Killingly's Ethan Lackner and Cooper Morrissette shared medalist honors at 44. Griswold is 5-5, 4-4.

— Pat Flanagan fired a team-best 43 and Gavin Porter had a 47 for Old Lyme in a 190-205 loss to North Branford in a match at Indian Springs. North Branford's Dakota Springs was the medalist with a 41. Old Lyme is 5-6.

— East Lyme's Matt Orefice earned medalist honors with a 37 in a 6-1 win over New London in an ECC Division I match at Old Lyme Country Club. Logan Rolfe had a 37 to win at No. 3 for the Vikings (11-0, 10-0). New London's Dan Stock won at No. 1 with a 38. The Whalers are 0-12, 0-11.

— Medalist Jack Kramer shot a 41 to lead Fitch past Bacon Academy, 5-2, at Shennecossett Golf Course. Casey Adams (46) and Elliot Reese (47) also won matches for the Falcons (7-7). David Tremblay and John Ceruti won matches for Bacon, which dropped to 7-3.

— Montville beat NFA, 5-2, in an ECC Division I match at Norwich Golf Course. Morgun Whittaker shot a 44 to win his match at No. 1 for the Indians (6-4, 5-3) and Tyler Radford (43) won at No. 3. JJ Hay had a 41 to earn medalist honors for the Wildcats (6-4, 4-3).
