H.S. Soccer: Brown's six goals lift Abilene High girls over Lubbock-Cooper

Laila Brown had an unforgettable day, scoring all six goals in Abilene High’s 6-5 victory over Lubbock-Cooper in a District 4-5A girls soccer game Tuesday at the Shotwell Annex.

Marin Murray, Zoe Vann, Justine Martinez and Alexa Lubanga each had assists, while AHS goalie Trinity Escobedo made four saves.

Brown’s big game allowed the Lady Eagles to finish the first half of district unbeaten at 6-0. AHS (11-1-1 overall) has a bye Friday before playing at Wylie on Tuesday.

Lubbock-Cooper (8-5-1, 2-2-1) dropped its second straight game.

“I’m very proud of these girls for fighting until the last minute to get the win,” first-year AHS coach Tiffany Van Hoose said. “Lubbock-Cooper has a strong attack that we struggled to slow down. Laila Brown had a heck of a game, getting six goals. Now, we get to rest up and start the second round of district next week against Wylie.”

Wylie quiets Coronado

Kaylee Richardson scored two goals, and Avery Anders made six saves as Wylie beat Lubbock Coronado 4-0 in a District 4-5A game at Sandifer Stadium.

Maci Hanson and Rozlyn Rumsey each had goals. Sarah Williams had two assists, while Taylar Riley and Hanson each had one for the Lady Bulldogs (6-8-3, 3-2) in the win over the Lady Mustangs (7-8-2, 2-3).

“Tonight’s win was massive for us,” Wylie coach Maddie Martin said. “I couldn’t be more proud of our team’s effort and toughness through the entire match. Coronado is a talented, well-coached team. So, we knew tonight was going to be a battle.

"I’m happy we were able to execute in the attacking third and score some high-quality goals. Avery Anders and the backline made some key plays to us keep the shutout.”

Wylie plays at Lubbock-Cooper on Friday.

Lubbock High edges Lady Coogs

At Lubbock, Lubbock High scored the game’s final two goals to beat Abilene Cooper 4-3 in a District 4-5A game.

Cayelyn Nault headed in a pass from Kayla Dillon for a 1-0 Cooper lead.

“This is Cayelyn’s first goal of the year, and she really hustled to get her head on it,” Cooper coach Michelle Velez said.

The Lady Westerners answered with two goals to lead 2-1 at halftime.

Lune Finch tied it up seven minutes into the second half off another Dillon assist. Finch put Cooper up 3-2 with a shot from about 30 yards out with 25:30 left in the game.

But LHS again answered, getting two goals – the last with 16:22 left in the game.

“Seeing our offense connect for goals is the positive we are taking away from today’s match,” Velez said. “Kayla Dillon’s control and placement of the ball drove our offense. Lune Finch worked her magic with a couple of great finishes.”

Cooper (2-13, 0-5) plays Coronado on Friday in Abilene.

BOYS

Coogs roar past Westerners

Joshua Okorodudu scored twice and assisted on another in Abilene Cooper’s 4-0 victory over Lubbock High in a District 4-5A game at the Shotwell Annex.

The Cougars (4-7-1, 1-4) snapped a five-game losing streak.

Okorodudu scored the only goal of the first half with 29:59 to play.

Christian Hernandez scored off an assist from Okorodudu with 24:00 remaining in the game. Jefferson Caceres added a penalty kick, and Okorodudo got his second goal with 6:49 to play. Juan Perez had the assist.

Eagles edge Lubbock-Cooper

At Woodrow, Sammy Ndabarishe and Brayden Henry each scored goals as Abilene High eclipsed Lubbock-Cooper 2-1 in a District 4-5A game.

Juan Luna and Henry each had assists for the Eagles (6-6-4, 5-1), who have a bye before hosting Wylie on Tuesday. The Pirates, 9-4-3 overall, dropped to 3-2 in district

Bulldogs silence Mustangs

At Lubbock, Wylie beat Lubbock Coronado 3-0 in a District 4-5A game.

Coronado (2-12-1, 0-5) has been outscored 28-0 in district thus far.

The Bulldogs (8-7-1, 3-2) host Lubbock-Cooper on Friday.
