H.S. Tennis: Albany's Marshall, Benjamin duo reach state finals

SAN ANTONIO – Albany’s Luke Marshall will play for the Class 2A boys state singles title Wednesday, while Benjamin’s Tallon Hayes and Valeria Zavala will play for the Class 1A state mixed doubles at Blossom Tennis Center.

Marshall, who reached the state semifinals last year but retired in the second set with an injury, will play Mason’s Mason Hatfield at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 2A boys singles title match.

Marshall advanced with wins over Sterling City’s Shane Pugh (6-2, 6-1) and Mason’s Quince Lawler (6-0, 6-0).

Hayes and Zavala reached the 1A mixed doubles final with wins over D’Hanis’ Gabe Perez and Sierra Reyes (6-1, 6-2) and Afton Patton Springs’ Toryan Childers and Diezel Ramirez (4-6, 6-1, 6-2).

They will play Mertzon Irion County’s Melanie Rainey and Tate Cormier in the state finals at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Both the Class 2A and 1A state tournaments are being played at Blossom Tennis Center.

Other Class 2A results

Albany’s Cason Fairchild and London Fuentes bowed out in the first round against Mason’s Robert Aguero and Jack Gillespie 6-3, 6-3 in boys doubles. The Mason duo reached the title match.

Hawley’s Francis Patanpatan and Benedict Patanpatan also fell in the first round of boys doubles, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, against Mason’s Cade Dudney and Keltan Jordan. The Mason tandem also won their semifinal match, setting up an all-Mason finale.

Albany’s Sidney Russell lost to Port Aransas’ Caroline Williams in the girls singles opener. Williams advanced to Wednesday’s title match, too.

Albany’s Abi Hale and Ella Wade dropped their first-round girls doubles match against Sonora’s Mariana DelaFuente and Montse DelaFuente 6-4, 6-1.

Other Class 1A results

Rising Star’s Colt Lawrence beat Utopia’s Lawson Leavelle in the first round 6-0, 6-3 before falling to Grady’s Chapman Sims 6-1, 6-3 in the state semifinals.

Utopia’s Luke Leavelle beat Rising Star’s Jake Bell 6-2, 6-3 in the opener en route to reaching the title match.

Priddy’s Zach Ward and Javier DelBosque dropped their first match 6-0, 6-2 against Knippa’s Cameron Santos and Ryan Santos in boys doubles.

Zephyr’s Haley Easton fell in the girls singles opener, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 against Knippa’s McKenzie Speer.

Woodson’s Betty Sheimann lost her girls singles opener 6-2, 6-1 against Runge’s Melina Ramirez, who reached the title match.
