H.S. track: Stephenville's Cameron loads up on medals at area meet

Stephenville’s Victoria Cameron had a pretty good day at the Districts 5- and 6-4A area track meet Friday at Sandifer Stadium.

The senior won the 100 meters, while running a leg on the winning 400 and 800 relay teams. She also got second in the long jump.

Cameron, who won a state title in the 100 as sophomore and took secondin the event last year, was a little nervous in the 100 at the area meet.

She drew lane No. 8, which runs close to the stands and forced her to worry more about staying in her lane than watching the rest of the runners.

She still won it in 11.82 seconds. Sweetwater’s Aunisti Griffin was second (12.55).

“I think it was a pretty good time for the (lane) I was in,” Cameron said. “I feel like it’s harder to run a race when you don’t see anyone in front of you. It was pretty good for that happening to me.”

Cameron teamed with Kenna Cashon, Marin Copeland and Mackenzie Gonzalez to win the 400 relay (48.23), while Lubbock Estacado was second (49.81).

She also ran with Presley Laduque, Madi Rust and Gonzalez to win the 800 relay (1:44.23) Lubbock Estacado (1:45.20) was second and Big Spring third (1:49.23).

Brownwood freshman Hannah Deen kept Cameron from getting four gold medals – and only by a sliver in the long jump. Deen won it with a leap of 16 feet, 8¾ inches. Cameron jumped 16-8½.

Deen had a big day, winning the triple jump (34-11¼) while getting second in the high jump (5-2) and 1,600 relay. She also finished fourth in the 300 hurdles (48.97).

Stephenville swept the boys and girls team titles.

The top four finishers in each event at the area meet advance to the Region I-4A meet next Friday and Saturday at Lowrey Field in Lubbock.

It was a good day for Cameron, who admits she driven to reclaim her state title in the 100 – something she let slip away last year.

Cameron missed defending her title last year by an eyelash in Austin. Terrell sophomore Ja’Naria Jackson won it in 11.74 seconds, while Cameron ran a 11.78.

It’s something she has thought about from time to time since.

“We were so worried about relays, because it was the first time they went to state in so long,” said Cameron, who ran legs on the Honeybees’ 400 and 800 relay teams at state. “There wasn’t a lot of attention going into to my individual event. It was kind of my fault, too, for not giving that much attention to the event I normally do best in.”

Cameron and the Honeybees collected a medal in the 400 relay, finishing third (47.98) behind Texarkana Liberty-Elyau (47.17) and Waxahachie Life (47.49).

Stephenville took fifth in the 800 relay (1:42.98).

While Cameron believes the relays caused her to lose focus a bit in the 100, her favorite event, she’s been excited about this year’s foursome in the two events.

“We have done so much better in the relays this year to the point where I’m really excited about them,” Cameron said.

Yet, Cameron wants to win the 100 again, and she would like to eclipse the 11.48 she ran to win it. She also finished second in the 200 her sophomore year at state, but she didn’t run the even this year.

Now, after reaching the state finals in soccer last week, Cameron – who will play soccer at Tarleton next year – is focused on finishing up her senior year in style.

“I think it’s really important to do the best I can since this is the last time this is ever going to happen,” Cameron said. “I can’t say, ‘Oh, I always have next year,’ because I don’t this year.”

Solis eyes state title in 800

Big Spring senior Adrian Solis would like to end his high school career with a state title, too.

He finished seventh in the 800 meters last year, running a 2:01.98. San Elizario junior Christopher Moreno won it in 1:58.42.

He continued his road back to state by winning the 800 at the area meet in 1:59.94. Stephenville’s Alex Loyola (2:00.83) and Jabez Esquivel (2:01.00) were second and third. Big Spring’s Jordan Mitchell nabbed the final region spot (2:01.08).

Solis is determined to get back to state and win it all.

“The goal is definitely to stay on with whoever leads the race (at state) and just break out the last 200 like I did today,” Solis said. “Just try to be consistent each lap. I know it’s really going to be hard, but I want that state title.”

Still, he ran Friday’s race with his teammates Diego Rios and Mitchell in mind.

“Today was trying to get my teammates to regionals as well,” Solis said. “That was really the goal. So, it was just me getting out there and trying to pace for everybody. I was just guiding everybody to a p.r. today.”

Mitchell got in, but Rios was disqualified for stepping off the track.
