H.S. wrestling: Mishawaka claims NLC crown with ease

Mishawaka claimed six individual champs and easily won the Northern Lakes Conference wrestling tournament Saturday at Goshen.

The Cavemen scores 243 ½ points, with Wawasee second at 189.

Will Mason (126-pound weight class), Zar Walker (132), Michael Robles (138), Beau Brabender (152), Isaac Valdez (170) and Christian Chavez (195) each won individual titles for the Cavemen.

Chavez and Travis Henke of Northridge remain undefeated this season. Chavez stands 30-0, while Henke is 32-0.

Duneland Athletic Conference:  State champs rule

Saturday was the day for defending state champs to shine at the Duneland Athletic Conference wrestling championships.

La Porte senior Ashton Jackson, a two-time defending state champ, improved his season record to 34-0 by winning the 120-pound weight class.

He pinned all his opponents, including Merrillville’s Matt Maldonado in the title match.

Crown Point, meanwhile, showed it is gearing up for another run at the state team title.  The defending state champions won the DAC crown with 299 points.  Merrillville was second with 224.

La Porte’s Devoin Duschek finished second in the 220-pound class.
