PLYMOUTH – After 25 years of building affordable housing for moderate- and low-income people, repairing homes and selling furniture, appliances and building materials at low prices for those in need, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Plymouth will mark its anniversary with the annual Hearts & Hammers Gala on Friday, Oct. 7.

“It’s our first chance to get people back together after a few years of not being able to do it because of the coronavirus,” Jim Middleton, executive director of the organization, said. “We really rely on our community, all the volunteers and all the good people that want to turn out and help us.”

Middleton said the event is expected to draw more than 200 people. It will be held at Hotel 1620 and feature dinner, dancing, live music by Natural Born Fools, silent and live auctions, raffles and guest speeches. The nonprofit serves Plymouth, Kingston, Carver, Plympton, Middleboro and Lakeville.

“There’s a tremendous and a growing need for affordable housing all throughout the area, and Habitat tries to work on that with a lot of very good community-minded volunteers that get together every week to build houses and then the families actually join in as well,” Middleton said. “Whoever’s selected to have the house puts in sweat equity hours to help build it.”

Middleton said he is looking forward to welcoming everyone  back after several years off and is excited to celebrate the anniversary  alongside some of the group's founders.

“It’s a good time to get together and celebrate the spirit of community and also support a good cause of trying to help people get into home ownership,” Middleton said.

Tickets cost $100 each and sponsorships are available. The event will start at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7, at Hotel 1620, 180 Water St., Plymouth. For more information, visit hfhplymouth.org.
