Hachet-swinging man arrested after high speed chase in stolen vehicle, Ga. deputies say
An attempted traffic stop on a stolen vehicle resulted in a high-speed chase and an incident involving a hatchet, according to the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office.
A Rabun deputy tried to initiate a traffic stop on a Ford Explorer with a Louisiana tag that was reported stolen.
The driver of a vehicle, identified as Charles Lawrence began speeding away from a deputy.
Lawrence lost control of the car and spun out where he was surrounded by law enforcement from multiple agencies.
Deputies said Lawrence then exited the vehicle while swinging a hatchet at law enforcement officers.

The Habersham County Sheriff’s Office, and an Officer with the Clayton Police Department were able to de-escalate the situation and arrest Lawrence, according to officials.
Lawrence was charged with fleeing, aggravated assault toward law enforcement (three counts), theft by receiving, possession of a controlled substance, reckless driving and driving without a license.
He is being held at the Rabun County Detention Center.

Deputies said no personnel or vehicles were injured during the pursuit.
No personnel or vehicles were injured or damaged during the pursuit, according to deputies.
Rabun County thanked the Clayton Police Department, Habersham County Sheriff’s Office and Georgia State Patrol.
