Hackensack, Morristown, St. Joe's among busiest hospital ERs in nation, poll reveals

Hackensack University Medical Center had the 10th-busiest emergency room in the United States in 2022, and two other North Jersey hospitals were close on its heels, a new poll found.

With 133,000 self-reported visits in 2022, Hackensack was 10th among 49 emergency rooms cited in the annual poll by Becker's Hospital Review magazine. St. Joseph’s University Medical Center in Paterson, with 112,690 visits, was listed 23rd. Morristown Medical Center, with 103,674 visits, was 35th.

Parkland Health and Hospital System in Dallas topped the 2022 list, with 226,178 visits. No other New Jersey hospitals cracked the top 49.

The figures indicate the number of emergency department visits seen by a single facility, not the total emergency visits seen by the entire health system. The list is not considered exhaustive, the poll announcement said.

St. Joseph's finished fifth in the 2021 Becker's poll, with 150,615 reported visits. Morristown was 37th with 93,362 visits. No other New Jersey hospitals, including Hackensack, made the 2021 list.
