Hackers may have stolen SSNs, other info from Coastal Orthopedics. Here’s what to know

Sensitive information — including Social Security numbers, birthdays and addresses — for current and former patients at Coastal Orthopedics may have been compromised after an attacker hacked into the company’s system.

The company detected suspicious activity on its network around June 11, prompting an investigation, according to a press release. Although the investigation is ongoing, Coastal Orthopedics determined that “certain files and folders within the network were taken without authorization.”

An estimate of the number of people impacted by the security breach is not yet available, Coastal Orthopedics told the Bradenton Herald Friday.

According to a press release, Coastal Orthopedics is “unaware of identity theft or fraud” resulting from the hack, but the company also said that patients’ sensitive information may have been stolen. Names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, financial account information, addresses and medical records may have been “potentially affected.”

The company plans to conduct a review to identify affected patients and send letters to notify them when possible. A public notice of the security breach, which the company describes as a “privacy event,” has already been posted on the Coastal Orthopedics website.

In addition to the investigation and review, Coastal Orthopedics notified federal law enforcement and said the company will notify any regulatory authorities where necessary.

“Coastal Orthopedics sincerely regrets any inconvenience this event may have caused potentially involved current or former Coastal Orthopedics patients. Coastal Orthopedics will provide notice of this event to all individuals whose personal information was involved, along with information and steps potentially impacted individuals can take to better protect their information,” the company said in a release.

Affected customers are urged to keep a close eye on their account statements and to file a police report if they believe they are a victim of identity theft or fraud.
