Had enough winter yet? A late-season bout of snow will hit Peoria this week

It's been a familiar story the past 45 days or so — a snowstorm hits Peoria in the mid-to-late part of a week.

This time, however, it's likely to be more of an annoyance than anything serious.

How much snow will Peoria get?

About 1 inch of snow is likely to fall beginning Thursday afternoon in Peoria, according to the National Weather Service office in Lincoln. Snowfall is expected to extend into Friday morning.

It isn't as powerful a storm as several that have swept through the area recently. That includes one in early February that dumped more than 10 inches of snow at the Peoria international airport.

"Overall, especially compared to what we had last month, it won't be too bad and should not stick around too long," said Chris Geelhart, a weather service meteorologist.

Areas west of Havana have a better chance of receiving more snow — perhaps 2 inches, Geelhart said Wednesday. Snow is expected to taper throughout the area by about noon Friday.

The snow might affect morning commutes Friday, according to Geelhart, but he expected road conditions to improve quickly.

When did Peoria's latest 1-inch snowfall happen?

Snow at the end of a typical winter season in Peoria isn't unusual. The latest date for at least 1 inch of snow been measured in the city is April 23, 1967, according to the weather service. That day, 1.4 inches of snow fell.

To date this winter season, 28½ inches of snow has been measured officially at the Peoria international airport. That's about 5 inches more than normal but nowhere near the all-time record of 54.6 inches, set in 2014.

A brief cold snap is expected to follow the snowfall this week. Temperatures Saturday are expected to reach only the high 20s, with below-zero wind chills possible.

But the high temperature Sunday is to reach the mid-50s, with mid-60s possible Wednesday, Geelhart said. The extended forecast calls for higher-than-usual temperatures. The normal temperature for that period is about 50 degrees.
