Hagerstown baseball has week for the books to highlight Wayne County boys sports

RICHMOND, Ind. — Hagerstown just finished off what might have been the best week of baseball any team has had all season. The Tigers came into the week 6-8. Five games later, they were 11-8. Not only are they bringing home five more wins, but they’re bringing home some hardware and plenty more confidence.

Hagerstown got its week started Tuesday with a 2-1 home win over Tri-Eastern Conference-leading Centerville, who was also ranked sixth in the state in Class 2A. Quaid Mull and Kayne Ervin combined to shut the Bulldog offense down on the mound. Ben Williams picked up two hits to lead the Tiger offense.

The next day, the Tigers took an 11-1 win over Knightstown. This time, they threw their ace pitcher, Reed Shaffer, and he did ace things, striking out five batters in six innings of work. Aiden Grover led the offense with three extra-base hits and three RBIs. Will Combs and Mull each had a pair of hits, and Combs and Williams each had a pair of RBIs.

The next day, the Tigers made quick work of Eastern Hancock with a 15-1 victory. That brought them to Saturday’s Wayne County Tournament.

First up was a rematch against Centerville, and Hagerstown proved Tuesday wasn’t a fluke, winning 3-2 to advance to the championship. Mull shut the Bulldogs down again, pitching a complete game and not allowing any earned runs. Collin Beaty, Grover and Combs each had two hits at the plate.

The Tigers made the title game look easy, topping Northeastern 11-0 and hoisting the traveling trophy. Williams, Ervin and Kaagen Kendall combined for the shutout. Cole Tracy had four hits, including two doubles. Combs and Ethan Campbell combined for six hits and seven RBIs. Beaty added another two hits.
