Hagerstown getting ready for municipal elections

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (DC News Now) — Hagerstown City Hall is gearing up for this year’s municipal elections.

Incumbent Mayor Takesha Martinez is not seeking another term since she is running for Congress in Maryland’s Sixth District.

Some candidates from the city’s business community are supporting closer cooperation with Washington County government as a way to lower the crime rate and address pressing infrastructure issues.

Hagerstown City Hall reopens to the public on Monday through Friday schedule

They want city hall and county commissioners to have more joint meetings and coordinate more efficiently on a broad range of public services.

“The city needs the county as much as the county needs the city,” said Bill McIntire, candidate for mayor. “Especially on managing the water and sewer systems.”

“The big thig is public safety,” said Sean Flaherty, who is seeking a seat on council. “People want to come to Hagerstown and live here and work here and make it a nicer city for all of us.”

Candidates run in Hagerstown on a nonpartisan ballot.
