Hagerstown man warns of danger from discarded drug needles found in alleys

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (DC News Now) — A downtown Hagerstown man is sounding the alarm about discarded drug needles that he finds in alleyways.

Michael Staup said he carefully collects the needles and takes them to the Washington County Health Department so they can be disposed of safely.

It is a constant project, Staup said as he finds the needles on daily a basis.

“The people who are shooting up drugs have a responsibility not to throw the needles on the ground,” Staup said. “But, then again, when you are shooting up drugs, meth and heroin, you’re not going to worry about the needle when it falls on the ground.”

Staup worries that children will pick up the needles and contract HIV.

He also has taken his concerns to local police who patrol his S. Mulberry Street neighborhood.

Staup said he is hopeful that he is hope, with Hagerstown’s former mayor, Emily Keller, holding rank as Maryland’s drug czar, that the city’s streets and alleys will be cleared of discarded needles.
