Hagerstown Police investigating homeless woman's death as homicide

Hagerstown Police are investigating the death of a homeless woman, found under a Jonathan Hager House porch on Friday morning, as a homicide, according to a city police news release.

Police are not releasing the woman's name until next of kin have been notified.

Police responded to the Hager House in Hagerstown City Park around 5:50 a.m. Friday for a report of a deceased person, the release states.

The 37-year-old woman was found inside a stone alcove under the porch. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the woman was known to sleep there.

It is "likely that the suspect and victim were known to each other," the release states.

Police are not releasing further details about the case, including the woman's manner of death, to protect the integrity of the investigation, the release states.

The Hager House was closed Friday, but is expected to reopen for regular hours on Saturday, according to Hagerstown Parks & Recreation.

The Hager House museum is the refurbished home of the city's founder, Jonathan Hager. The house is off Key Street in the north end of the park.
