‘Hail to the Commanders!’ Washington wants fan input on revamped fight song and new mascot

The Washington Commanders’ new identity soon will have some more additions: a revamped fight song and new mascot.

The team announced two choices for the Commanders’ new song based on the melody and lyrics of its previous fight song — “Hail to the Redskins.” And on Aug. 13, the team will unveil its selections for a new mascot. The final version of the song and mascot will be decided by fan voting.

“We are revamping the Fight Song arrangement for a new and fresh composition that still stays true to the recognizable lyrics and melody you, the fans, know and love,” the team wrote on its website Tuesday.

Voting on the fight-song lyrics will conclude Aug. 6, and the revamped song will be premiered by the Commanders Marching Band at Washington’s preseason home game Aug. 13 against Carolina. Voting for a new mascot also will open that day.

“We are excited to unveil both our revamped Fight Song and new team mascot during the 2022 season, our inaugural season under a new name and brand identity,” Washington team president Jason Wright said in a statement. “Our first season as the Commanders is all about connecting our past and present, and we are excited to work closely with fans to help bring back these traditions under a new banner and combine them with new traditions fans will help to create.”

The fight song — “Hail to the Commanders” — mostly follows the original with updated lyrics replacing Redskins with Commanders. Fans will choose the third and 12th lines between: “Fight for our Commanders!” and “Leaders on a mission!”
