Meteorologists say a strong thunderstorm in the Sacramento area is bringing pea-sized hail and a funnel cloud through northern portions of the metro area Saturday afternoon.

The National Weather Service is encouraging people in the areas of southeastern Sutter, northern Sacramento and southwestern Placer counties to shelter indoors amid 30 mph winds and quarter-inch hail. The special weather statement issued just after noon recommends residents stay inside until at least 1:15 p.m.

The storm, in which a funnel cloud was spotted on radar near Pleasant Grove, is moving northeast at 10 mph, meteorologists say.

Minor damage to outdoor objects is possible in Roseville, Rocklin, Lincoln, Loomis and Pleasant Grove.
