Haines House plans Christmas program on Civil War

ALLIANCE − Haines House Underground Railroad Museum will present a new holiday program called "Voices of a Civil War" at 7 p.m. Dec. 3.

Taking place inside the historic home, local performers will read the words of famous authors, abolitionists and others telling their stores of the years leading up to, and during, the Civil War.

The cost is $10 and reservations are required for the event. Seats are limited to 51. Light refreshments will be served after the readings, and all proceeds benefit Haines House.

Haines House is operated by the Alliance Area Preservation Society. The museum, at 186 W. Market St. in Alliance, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Guests will hear three sets of Christmas-themed readings, about 20 minutes each, presented in three rooms of Haines House. The house will be decorated for a 19th century Christmas.

The readings are:

  • "An Army Hospital Christmas," in the Haines Parlor, from Louisa May Alcott, author of Little Women, who served as a nurse during the Civil War.

  • "Soldier, Civilian and Slave: Light and Darkness of a Wartime Christmas," in the Morris Room, are five shorts that include letters from a soldier, a girl, Frederick Douglass and others.

  • "The Ladies Radical Abolitionist Sewing Circle's Guide to Christmas Fairs," in the Founders Room, will tell the story of how Northeast Ohio women and their right to end slavery.
