Some Haitian quake refugee camps growing again

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — A new study finds that many of the camps for Haitians displaced by the 2010 earthquake are growing again, even as the overall population of quake refugees is falling.

The study from the International Organization for Migration says that 78 of 243 camps saw numbers grow.

The IOM attributes the phenomenon mostly to people who have returned because they can't afford rents elsewhere. Some may want rejoin family members. Others may be moving from one camp to another.

The IOM says as many as 1.5 million people once lived in the gloomy settlements. The report released on Monday says that overall number has dropped to 137,543 people, almost 9,000 fewer than in January.
