Halcyon Music Festival returns to Portsmouth
PORTSMOUTH — The 2023 Halcyon Music Festival returns for its ninth season with six unique chamber music programs. Halcyon Music Festival brings 21 world-class musicians to live, rehearse, and perform together. All the concerts take place at 7 p.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, N.H. Individual tickets and multi-concert packages are available.
The 2023 Halcyon Music Festival schedule includes:
Opening Night, Thursday, June 15: “Lyric” features Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G Major, performed by Ben Sayevich, Grace Park, Emma Frucht, violins; Tim Deighton, Jordan Bak, Danny Kim, violas; Jonah Ellsworth, David Hardy, Peter Stumpf, cellos; Charles Clements, bass; and Lolita Lisovskaya-Sayevich, harpsichord. George Walker’s Lyric for Strings, performed by a string ensemble of festival musicians. Mozart’s Piano Quartet No. 1 in G minor, K. 478, performed by Ben Sayevich, violin; Jordan Bak, viola; Peter Stumpf, cello; and Lolita Lisovskaya-Sayevich, piano. Brahms’ Piano Quintet in F minor, Op. 34, performed by Grace Park, Emma Frucht, violins; Danny Kim, viola; Jonah Ellsworth, cello; and Heng-Jin Park, piano.
There will be a special Q&A with the festival musicians following the opening night performance.
Friday, June 16: “Summer Sounds” features Dvořák’s Piano Quartet No. 2 in Eb Major, Op. 87, performed byBen Sayevich, violin; Tim Deighton, viola; David Hardy, cello; and Heng-Jin Park, piano. Britten’s String Quartet No. 2 in C Major, Op. 36, performed byEmma Frucht, Monica Pegis, violins; Danny Kim, viola; and Jonah Ellsworth, cello. Mendelssohn’s String Quartet No. 6 in F minor, Op. 80, performed byGrace Park, Gabriela Diaz, violins; Jordan Bak, viola; and Peter Stumpf, cello.
Saturday, June 17: “Youthful Genius” features Rachmaninoff’s Trio élégiaque No. 1 in G minor, performed byEmma Frucht, violin; Jonah Ellsworth, cello; and Lolita Lisovskaya-Sayevich, piano. Schubert’s String Quartet No. 13 in A minor, Op. 29, ‘Rosamunde’, performed by Ben Sayevich, Gabriela Diaz, violins; Jordan Bak, viola; and David Hardy, cello. Schönberg’s Verklärte Nacht, Op. 4, performed byGrace Park, Monica Pegis, violins; Danny Kim, Tim Deighton, violas; and Jonah Ellsworth, Peter Stumpf, cellos.
Thursday, June 22: “For the People” features a selection of Beethoven’s Folk Song Selections, performed by Thomas Meglioranza, baritone; Monica Pegis, violin; David Hardy, cello; and Heng-Jin Park, piano. Webern’s Langsamer Satz, performed by Julia Glenn, Monica Pegis, violins; Marcus Thompson, viola; and Loewi Lin, cello. Bolcom’s Three Rags for String Quartet, performed byGabriela Diaz, Solomiya Ivakhiv, violins; Tim Deighton, viola; and Loewi Lin, cello. Brahms’ Piano Quartet No. 3 in C minor, Op. 60, performed byBen Sayevich, violin; Katherine Murdock, viola; Alexei Gonzales, cello; and Lolita Lisovskaya-Sayevich, piano.
Friday, June 23: “Longing and Lullabies” features Brahms’ Zwei Gesänge, Op. 91, performed by Thomas Meglioranza, baritone; Tim Deighton, viola; and Heng-Jin Park, piano. Schumann’s Piano Quintet in Eb Major, Op. 44, performed byJulia Glenn, Gabriela Diaz, violins; Marcus Thompson, viola; Loewi Lin, cello; and Lolita Lisovskaya-Sayevich, piano. Ravel’s Piano Trio, performed bySolomiya Ivakhiv, violin; Alexei Gonzales, cello; and Heng-Jin Park, piano.
Closing Night, Saturday, June 24: “Land of Dreams” features Barber’s Dover Beach, Op. 3, performed by Thomas Meglioranza, baritone; Gabriela Diaz, Solomiya Ivakhiv, violins; Marcus Thompson, viola; and David Hardy, cello. Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 7 in F# minor, Op. 108, performed byBen Sayevich, Julia Glenn, violins; Tim Deighton, viola; and Jonah Ellsworth, cello. Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 6 in Bb Major, Op. 18, performed bySolomiya Ivakhiv, Monica Pegis, violins; Katherine Murdock, viola; and Jonah Ellsworth, cello. Brahms’ String Sextet No. 2 in G Major, Op. 36, performed byGabriela Diaz, Julia Glenn, violins; Marcus Thompson, Katherine Murdock, violas; and David Hardy, Loewi Lin, cellos.
Single concert tickets are $25 for general admission and $10 for students. Multi-concert ticket packages are also available at discounted rates: six concerts for $130, five for $110, four for $88, and three for $65. Subscribers who select at least one of the Thursday evening performances as part of either the three or four-concert package will receive an additional $10 discount.
Each concert will also be livestreamed and tickets for those virtual performances are $25.
