Haley Schoenegge gives KCD first girls cross country state champ in 23 years

Senior Haley Schoenegge gave the Kentucky Country Day girls cross country program its first champion in 23 years.

Schoenegge cruised to victory Saturday in the KHSAA Cross Country Class A Championships at the Bourbon County Cross Country Course in Paris, crossing the finish line in 19 minutes, 0.30 seconds. Beechwood freshman Lily Parke was the runner-up in 19:29.20.

Schoenegge became the first KCD girl to win a state cross country title since Geraldine Smith in 1999. Schnoegge was the runner-up last year with a time of 19:53.27.

Beechwood took the girls team championship with 65 points and was followed by Lexington Christian (76), St. Henry (151), Bishop Brossart (187), St. Mary (214) and KCD (264).

KCD senior Maddox Miller finished 21st with a time of 20:55.50.

St. Henry won the Class A boys team title for the second straight year with 53 points. Villa Madonna was second with 103 points and was followed by Highlands Latin (111), Bethlehem (147) and Bishop Brossart (241).

St. Henry senior Dixon Ryan took individual honors with a time of 16:03.83. Bishop Brossart junior Nathan Ruth was second at 16:18.49, and Collegiate freshman James Gurley was third at 16:33.04.

Junior Clayton Nau (16th place, 17:03.96) and Josiah Claunch (17th place, 17:05.65) led the way for Highlands Latin.
