Halloween 2022: When can you go trick-or-treating in Montgomery, surrounding areas?

After about a month’s worth of costume contests, festivals and other fall activities, it’s time for the real deal. Halloween is here, and this special night of trick-or-treating is officially being celebrated throughout the River Region on Monday, the actual date.

The times for supervised, costumed kids to roam neighborhoods for candy is a little different, depending on what city you’re in.

Trick or treat times, rules for River Region localities

  • In Montgomery, officials suggest wrapping up trick-or-treating by 9 p.m. Montgomery police will be on patrol throughout neighborhoods that night.

  • Also Monday, Montgomery police will also be partnering with Montgomery County Sheriff Derrick Cunningham for his annual drive-thru trick-or-treat event from 5:30-8 p.m. at Garrett Coliseum, 1555 Federal Drive. Drivers should enter at the rear of the coliseum off Coliseum Boulevard and proceed through the line to collect candy.

  • Prattville’s official trick-or-treating happens from 6-8 p.m.

  • In Millbrook, trick-or-treating also has a cut-off time at 8 p.m.

  • The official citywide trick or treating for Wetumpka is 5-7 p.m., and they’ve announced they’ll have additional police patrolling during this time.

  • In Pike Road, while there are no official set times for trick-or-treating, the town encourages everyone to do so on Monday. Officials encourage residents to reach out to their neighborhood associations to see if they have Halloween guidelines.

In a release from Montgomery Mayor Steven L. Reed and the Montgomery City Council, the city offered safety tips for those who go out Monday:

Safety tips for trick-or-treaters

  • Trick-or-treat only with family members and people you know.

  • Adults should accompany children and take them to well-lit houses of neighbors they trust.

  • Be cautious, kind and courteous at the door.

  • Obey traffic rules and look both ways before crossing the street.

  • Wear reflective clothing and bring glow sticks or flashlights for visibility while trick-or-treating.

  • Parents should make sure that their children’s costumes do not obscure vision, make it difficult to walk, or present other safety hazards.

  • Carry hand sanitizer.

  • All items that children receive while trick-or-treating should be inspected closely by an adult prior to allowing children to handle or consume them.

For homes welcoming trick-or-treaters

  • Provide a pedestrian-friendly environment.

  • Open sidewalks and driveways as residents approach homes where others are getting candy.

  • It is safest to use a flashlight or battery-operated candle in a jack-o-lantern. If you use a real candle, use extreme caution. Make sure children are watched at all times when candles are lit. When lighting candles inside jack-o-lanterns, use long, fireplace-style matches or a utility lighter.  Be sure to place lit pumpkins well away from anything that can burn and far enough out of the way of trick-or-treaters, doorsteps and walkways.

Be sure to inspect your kids' Halloween candy before letting them eat it.
