Halloween Advent Calendars Exist and the Countdown Is Officially On

This spooky accessory is about to become your new favorite fall tradition.

We spend all year looking forward to Halloween, and this year’s countdown to October 31 is going to be better than ever. It turns out advent-style calendars aren’t just for Christmas—Halloween advent calendars exist, and you’re definitely going to want one.

These calendars are just like the Christmas version you’re used to, but even better. For starters, you get 31 days of prizes or chocolates instead of just 25. Traditional Advent calendars run from December 1 through 25, since Advent is a religious season of preparing for Christmas. But the Halloween take on these classic calendars begins on October 1 and will help you count down the days until it's finally time to don your Halloween costume on October 31.

We'll certainly be adding this to our list of favorite new Halloween products, along with these ceramic Halloween trees from Amazon (which are almost sold out already!) and Pottery Barn's gorgeous new line of home decor. If you want to get a head start on your fall preparations, there are a few Halloween calendar options already on the market, and they’re all hauntingly cute. These are our favorite Halloween advent calendars you can buy right now.

Felt Countdown Calendar

Don't worry about running out to buy candy and toys for this countdown calendar. It comes with everything you need to fill each day's pockets—and the best part is that the whole thing can be reused year after year. The wall hanging measures 36 inches by 19 inches, and comes equipped with 36 bright, festive ornaments your little ones can remove from the pockets and place on the felt design. You'll start the month with an empty haunted house, and by the time you reach Halloween you'll be looking at a fun, festive scene.

Story Time Countdown

This calendar is actually a storybook, which makes it perfect for kids. Each pop-out window reveals a photo and a new verse from a story called One Halloween Night, so your family can read the full tale together on Halloween night once all the dates (and all the candy) have been opened.

Fabric Features

There are so many things you could do with this custom countdown. Instead of candy, fill each pocket with a thoughtful note or creepy critters (think plastic spiders and faux snakes). The felt calendar measures 26 inches long and can be embroidered with a name or phrase that fits your family.

Farmhouse Advent Calendar

We get it: Bright orange and black decor pieces don't always fit with a light and airy decor scheme. That's why we love this 16-inch farmhouse-inspired Halloween advent calendar. It's got all the pumpkins, ghosts, and skulls you'd expect from a Halloween display, but the color scheme is completely up to you. Leave the wood natural or paint it however you like. As one reviewer points out, it's carefully made and comes with helpful suggestions and instructions. The listing also contains photos of finished, painted houses if you're looking for further inspiration.

Spooky Scenery

This 46-inch-long felt wall hanging features 31 pockets designed to look like windows in a haunted house. Fill the pockets with small treats or trivia facts about Halloween to keep the kids entertained all season long. Since trick-or-treating likely won't happen as normal this year, have the kids perform a trick to receive a treat from this countdown calendar every day of the month.

Victorian Haunted House

If you’re willing to shell out a little more (ok, a lot more) for your holiday countdown, this elaborate advent calendar was our favorite Etsy find last year. This Victorian-style haunted house from Etsy seller Halloween Advent House went for a little over $1,600, since this oversized house is crafted entirely by hand (plus, it's huge!). The house is outfitted with magnetic doors that reveal a different ghoulish creature each day of the month, and is equipped with a remote lighting system for maximum spookiness. It has rave reviews on Etsy and is so popular it’s currently sold out—but it was restocked more than once last season, so we're confident it will be back in stock this year.

If you'd rather make your own, try one of our DIY Christmas Advent calendars in orange and black and fill it with your family's favorite treats.
