Halloween writer Danny McBride has said that he understands the criticism leveled at the final instalment of the mammoth horror franchise.

McBride signed on as an executive producer as well as a writer for a trio of Halloween movies, starting with 2018's Halloween, then with 2021's Halloween Kills, and then finishing with the franchise's final movieHalloween Ends.

That final film upset some fans, however, as Rohan Campbell's Corey Cunningham ended up becoming the main villain over the iconic Michael Myers. Fans believed that this took the focus away from Michael Myers and Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis).

In an interview with US Magazine, McBride said that this criticism is "valid."

"I think that is a valid criticism. All three of these movies [were] really David Green’s sort of brainchild. He had a very distinct idea of what he wanted to do with this," McBride said.

"And I just felt lucky that he brought me along for the ride to help him where I could and to try to give him anything I could on it. And when he told me his pitch for focusing on this Corey character, I thought that it was cool."

He continued: "I thought it was a smart take on it. I thought that it was a way to avoid repetition and sort of explore something a little different and still tying it into what Halloween’s ultimately about."

The co-writer and director for that movie, David Gordon Green, previously talked about this controversial change, explaining that he "wanted to get a new perspective of Michael Myers and Laurie Strode and the family."

"We'd seen the story of a stalker, and we'd seen a lot of the ways that trauma had affected Laurie Strode, but I really wanted to see how that affected the town," Green said, arguing that Corey's role is a "pivotal exploration of those characters and the town."

Halloween Ends is available to rent in the UK from Prime Video, iTunes, Microsoft Store and other digital retailers, and is available to watch on Peacock in the US.
