Orange is the New Black actor Pablo Schreiber has been cast as the lead in Showtime's adaptation of gaming sensation Halo.

This long-gestating TV project will initially run for nine episodes, with Peaky Blinders and Black Mirror director Otto Bathurst signed up for multiple entries.

Schreiber will portray the series' main protagonist Master Chief (via TV Line), known as Earth's most advanced warrior of the 26th century and humanity's only hope against a merciless alien force.

Halo has also reeled in Australian newcomer Yerin Ha to play Quan Ah, an original character developed for the TV landscape – described as an "audacious 16-year-old from the Outer Colonies".

Steven Kane and Kyle Killen are on as showrunners for the series, which will commence production this autumn in Hungary's capital city, Budapest.

Showtime CEO David Nevins previously noted how Halo will be different from industry monolith Game of Thrones.

"It is a very different genre, it's futuristic, space-based science fiction, it's not fantasy," he explained. "It took us a long time to get the script but we felt like we had something that was really interesting and felt like it belonged on Showtime in terms of its character depth, and it's gonna be a big show."
