Hamden native, star goalie Jonathan Quick traded to Columbus Blue Jackets ahead of NHL trade deadline

Longtime Los Angeles Kings goalie and Hamden native Jonathan Quick was traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday, two days before the NHL trade deadline.

Quick, who was born in Milford and grew up in Hamden, is undoubtedly the greatest NHL goalie ever to come out of Connecticut, and one of the most accomplished U.S.-born goalies of all-time. The 37-year-old played a major role in winning two Stanley Cup titles with the Kings, in 2012 and ’14. He won the Conn Smythe trophy as the most valuable player in the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs and is a three-time All-Star.

The Blue Jackets will receive Quick in exchange for goaltender Joonas Korpisalo, defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov, a conditional first-round draft pick in 2023 and a third-round pick in 2024.

Quick had lost his starting job to Pheonix Copley after struggling this season, posting an 11-13-4 record, a 3.50 goals against average and a .876 save percentage, which ranks 51st among goalies.

The trade signals that the Kings (34-20-8, 76 points) felt an upgrade was necessary as they gear up for a playoff run. Korpisalo, 28, is 11-11-3 with a 3.17 goals against average and a .913 save percentage.

Columbus, meanwhile, owns the worst record in the NHL (20-35-6, 46 points) and it’s possible the Blue Jackets may look to deal the veteran goaltender to a contender before the 3 p.m. ET Friday deadline.
