“I am deeply honored to be recognized by Lake Michigan Credit Union for my work in education,” Herrick wrote in a post on the district website. “As an educator, the work is so uplifting and rewarding, but it can also be a grind at times.

“This recognition serves as a reminder that what we do not only impacts students in meaningful ways, but that it is also being seen and supported by those outside of education.”

Teachers were nominated for the award by students, parents, fellow teachers, peers, community members and administrators.

Other awardees in Allegan and Ottawa counties were Keegan Goalen, Julie Oosterink, Meagen Russ and Jenny van Biljon from Jenison, Tammie Thompson from Grand Haven, Lisa Mulder from Spring Lake and Kelli Pfefferman from Otsego.

The grant can be used to purchase classroom supplies, certifications, or anything else that benefits the educational process. Herrick plans to use the grant for new band equipment and other program needs, according to the district website.
