Seven-time Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton will leave Mercedes to join Ferrari in 2025 on a multi-year contract, the Italian team says.

"Scuderia Ferrari is pleased to announce that Lewis Hamilton will be joining the team in 2025, on a multi-year contract," the record F1 champions said in a statement.

Hamilton will still race for Mercedes in the 2024 season, which starts on March 2 in Bahrain. Earlier, the German outfit announced that Hamilton activated the release option in his contract and will leave at the end of the year.

Hamilton will join Charles Leclerc in the Ferrari line-up for 2025. Current Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz announced he is leaving the team at the end of the 2024 season.
