Longtime Hamilton School Board President Gabe Kolesari is stepping down for medical reasons.

Kolesari's resignation will take effect April 1, according to a news release from the Hamilton School District. A member of the board for decades, he was most recently elected in April 2022; his term was set to run through 2025.

The news release did not specify what medical reasons prompted his resignation.

He has been a board member for the past 34 years, and served as the board's president for the past 21 years, according to the release.

“I want to express my appreciation for the opportunity and honor in serving the students, families and staff of the Hamilton School District for the past 34 year," Kolesari said in the release. "It has been a wonderful experience and personal source of pride to work with the teachers, administrators, community and fellow Board members to make a positive difference in thelives of our students."

Kolesari also served as president of the board of control for Cooperative Educational Service Agency 1 and is still a mentor. He is also a Veterans of Foreign Wars commander and Sussex Area Service Club member. Kolesari is a Marine Corps veteran, having served during the Vietnam War, the news release said.

The release said the vacancy would be filled "in accordance with the established procedural guidelines," but didn't specify what those guidelines are.

In a follow up email, the district's director of communications, Nicole Koglin, said information about how Kolesari's seat will be filled will be posted once his resignation is official April 1.

A second vacancy on the board

Kolesari's resignation will create a second vacancy on the seven-member board.

The school Board is also trying to find a replacement for its village of Butler seat, which was vacated by Rebecca Zingsheim on Feb. 1 "due to the challenges of balancing a new job and School Board responsibilities," according to a post on the district's website. The term for Zingsheim's seat runs until April 2024.

To be eligible to serve as an appointee for the Butler seat, applicants must be a resident of the village and file a letter of interest with their name, residential address, phone number, qualifications and reasons for wanting to serve on the school board, as well as a sworn declaration of eligibility to hold the vacant board seat. The letter of interest is due by March 1; the declaration of eligibility is due before the board considers potential appointees.
