The Hamilton Hawkeyes split a doubleheader with Three Rivers, losing the first game 4-5 and winning the second 11-10.

Madie Jamrog took the loss in the first game, tossing all seven innings while giving up 10 hits and striking out 10 batters.

In the second game, Kianna Vork got the win in the circle allowing 11 hits and six earned runs with five strikeouts. Vork also went 2-for-4, including two home runs, one of which was a walk-off bomb in the seventh.

Raya VanderZwaag also added a long-ball in her 3-for-4 performance which included two RBIs and four stolen bases.

"We earned a split with Three Rivers in a wild doubleheader. We rebounded from a tough game one loss with a spirited come-from-behind win. Kianna Vork went the distance on the mound with great composure," said Hamilton coach Mark Behnke. "Offensively, she hit two home runs including the walkoff winner to open the bottom of the seventh. Raya VanderZwaag was big in game two with a double, home run and four stolen bases."

SOFTBALL

Zeeland West sweeps Holland Christian

Freshman Emily Kragt came to the ballpark and meant business on Thursday, tallying four hits and leading Zeeland West to a 16-1 win over Holland Christian in game one. Kragt singled twice in the first, singled in the second and singled in the fourth.

The Dux secured the victory thanks to ten runs in the first inning. Zeeland West's big bats were led by Taylor Zwagerman, Alexa Brott, Avery Vugteveen, Carly Sleeman, Kragt, and Zwagerman, who each had RBIs in the inning.

Kragt pitched the Dux to victory in her first varsity outing. Kragt allowed two hits and one run over four innings, striking out three and walking one.

K Smits took the loss for Holland Christian Varsity Maroons. The hurler went four innings, allowing 16 runs on 18 hits and striking out five.

Zeeland West Dux Varsity tallied 18 hits. Kragt, Brott, Izzy Zamora, Zwagerman, Sleeman, and Maddie Wyckoff each collected multiple hits for Zeeland West Dux Varsity. Kragt led Zeeland West Dux Varsity with four hits in four at-bats.

In the second game, the Dux continued to be strong with the bats. They put up nine runs in the first inning and finished the game with junior Carly Sleeman hitting a grand slam in the bottom of the third.

The Dux rallied after the Maroons turned a double play in the bottom of the third. Sophomore Izzy Zamora came to the plate and launched a solo home run over the fence. The Dux then scored three more with hits from Taylor Zwagerman, Alexa Brott, Maddie Wyckoff, Morgan Patrick, and solid at-bat walks from Makena Moungkhoun and Avery Vugteveen before Sleeman ended the game with a grand slam to right-center.

Sleeman, Zamora, and Zwagerman had multiple hits.

Freshman Maddie Wyckoff got the win in the circle in her first high school start. She threw three innings allowing one run on two hits, walking one and striking out two.

“We were extremely proud of Maddie and Emily tonight in the circle. They both were confident and had great composure and control. We look forward to their growth this season.” said Zeeland West coach Scott Sliva.

The Dux move to 7-2 on the season and host Grandville at home on Friday at 4:30.

BASEBALL

Fennville 13, Martin 1

Fennville defeated Martin 13-1 in five innings Thursday evening.

Max Machado picked up the win for the Blackhawks pitching a complete game while allowing one earned run on four hits, one walk and five strikeouts.

Machado also lead the way offensively going 3-for-3 with a triple, two RBI’s and a walk.

Ben Peterson was 1-for-2 with two RBI’s, three runs scored, a stolen base and was hit by pitch twice. Quinn Rosema went 1-for-2, scored twice and drew a walk. Mason Long went 1-for-2 with 1 RBI and a walk. Albert Camberos added a single, three RBI’s and a run scored. Nathan Griffin had a hit, RBI, scored a run and stole two bases. Tre Cooper drew two walks, scored two runs and stole a base. Greyson Bale walked once and scored a run. Corey Callejas scored 3 runs.

"We came out and did what we needed to on a chilly evening. Max threw strikes and we made plays behind him," said Fennville coach Steve Peterson. "We were patient at the plate, saw a lot of pitches and came up with some timely two-strike hits."

Hamilton 9, Spring Lake 0

Thano Klett led the Hawkeyes on the mound striking out 12 while walking two and giving up only one hit in the complete-game shutout. Brant Goodpaster and Brayden Geurink each had three hits and two RBIs. Joe Johnson also had two hits and two RBIs.

Holland sweeps Union

After being postponed due to darkness, game two of the conference series with the Union Redhawks was resumed with the score tied 4-4 with Union at bat and runners on first and third with one out. Back-to-back hit batters scored a run for the Redhawks, but the damage was limited after back-to-back strikeouts brought the Dutch to bat for a chance to come back.

In the bottom of the inning, a leadoff walk by Emmett Book put the tying run on base. Two quick outs brought Carson Van Hekken up, who also walked on four straight pitches. A clutch steal by Book and Carson put two runners in scoring position for Jackson Van Hekken, who then hit a hard line drive to left field to score both runners and win the second game of the series in walk-off fashion.

Andon Grigg went six innings on the mound, striking out 12 while allowing four hits and five walks. Jackson Van Hekken finished the game on the mound to take the win, striking out two.

Jackson also led the Dutch with his bat, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs. Zach Hop, Brayden Snyder, and Carson Van Hekken had hits as well.

In the second game, the Union Redhawks started the scoring by putting two runs on the board in the first inning, but Holland did the scoring for the rest of the game, winning 6-2. The Dutch scored for four straight innings after that, putting up six runs to keep the Redhawks at bay and complete their first sweep of the 2022 season.

Pitching was solid for the Dutch, with Jackson Van Hekken, Sean Ruhf, and Ryan Duff combining for 13 Ks and only three hits and three walks.

Senior Isaiah Martinez was on base every time, going 2-for-2 at the plate with a double, walk, and HBP to lead the Dutch. Sophomore Emmett Book also had two hits with a double and Sean Ruhf provided the team's first triple of the year.

The sweep of the Redhawks brings the Dutch above .500 to 6-5 on the season and 5-4 in conference play.

Zeeland East swept by Mona Shores

Zeeland East was swept by OK Green leaders, Mona Shores, on Thursday losing 14-2 and 6-3 in double-header action.

Game one was tight in the fifth inning of play with the Chix trailing 4-2 before Mona Shores tallied 10 runs in the final two innings to break the game open. Trevor Raade started on the mound for Zeeland East but was knocked out of the game by a line drive in the fourth inning. Raade pitched 3 2/3 innings allowing four runs (three earned) on only three hits, four walks and striking out four batters.

Offensively Raade led the Chix going 2-for-2 with a single, homerun, RBI and run scored. Brenston Brown also added two hits and an RBI in the game.

In game two Easton Remick recorded the loss for the Chix, pitching 4 1/3 innings, allowing six runs on six hits while walking four and striking out four.

Offensively, Zeeland East was led by Max Salas and Charlie Lacny who each had two hits in the game, while Brenston Brown added another RBI single and Austin Keur scored two runs.

Black River 12, WM Aviation 8

Black River won the rematch with West Michigan Aviation Academy 12-8 the River Rats battled back after giving up the lead with timely hitting led by Nick Wreschinsky going 3-for-4 with three runs scored, Elliott Gronevelt pitched four innings for the win.

GIRLS SOCCER

Kalamazoo Christian 2, Saugatuck 0

Kalamazoo Christian defeated Saugatuck 2-0 this evening in girls soccer. Kennedy Gustafson played a strong game in net to keep things close, stopping 14 shots. Saugatuck falls to 5-2-2 on the season and is now 2-1-2 in the SAC.

Mona Shores 3, Holland 1

Holland hosted conference rival Mona Shores on Thursday night and lost 3-1.

Layray Paw put Holland (5-4-1) on top 1-0 early in the first half, but Mona Shores scored three unanswered goals to close out the half. Neither team scored in the second half.

"Mona Shores is a very dangerous team offensively," said Holland coach Greg Ceithaml. "We possessed the ball well despite their pressure. Our center backs Ellie Zomer and Aiden VandeVusse did an impressive job in limiting their scoring opportunities."

West Ottawa 0, Jenison 0

Both teams struggle to create chances in the 0-0 draw between the Wildcats and Panthers

TENNIS

West Ottawa 8, East Kentwood 1

The Panthers lost the first point of the match, but swept the rest of them on their way to a dominant win. Danielle Lebster got the win at No. 2 singles by a score of 6-1, 6-3.

Chloe Duckworth came away with a No. 3 singles win by a score of 6-0, 6-1. Grace Gaul rounded off the singles points with a 6-0,6-0 win at No. 4 singles.

In the doubles matches, Madelyn Moored and Kaitlyn Meyer came away with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles. At the No. 2 doubles spot, Kamryn Dumas and Kelly Linart won 6-0, 6-1. Halle Pratt and Eleanor Ervine earned a perfect 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 doubles. In the fourth doubles spot, Rachel Kennedy and Jessica Zhang won 6-0, 6-1 while Eden Hamilton and Kayla Jones capped off the day with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 5 doubles.

BOYS GOLF

Hamilton finishes third at OK Blue Jamboree

Hamilton Hawkeyes finished 3rd as a team. Eli Timmerman tied for the lowest score with a 36. Riley Johr finished with a 39, Ben Boehm 42, and Jacob Lange and Justin McIllwain both shot 49.

West Ottawa finishes fifth at OK Red Jamboree, post season-low score

The Panthers hosted the Ron Palmer Memorial Mid-Season tournament and finished fifth while shooting a season-low 350. The Panthers were led by sophomore Carson Witvoet with a team and career-low score of 84, followed by sophomore Will Niziolek and senior Gavin Hardy with 87s, and junior Jackson Wiegerink adding a 92.

BOYS LACROSSE

West Ottawa 12, Lowell 11

Aaron Johnson had the game-winner for a sudden victory. Trent Mulder had two goals and six assists and Cole Tulgetske had five goals and a helper. Mitch Weisner had two goals and Cooper Nienhuis also scored a goal and had six ground balls. Caden Adkins had seven ground balls and Levi Henning led the D with eight ground balls and also had an assist.

Grand Haven 12, Zeeland 6

Zeeland lost the out-of-conference matchup.

GIRLS TRACK

Holland Christian 92, Fruitport 41

Meghan Bengelink won the 200 in a time of 29.68. She also won the 400 in a time of 1:05.93. Sarah Schloff won the 800 and 1600, finishing in 2:44.82 and 5:50.63. Abbe Baas won the 110 and 300 hurdles in times of 19.58 and 54.30. The Maroons also won the 4X200 relay with a time of 1:58.17, the 4X400 relay with a time of 4:53.71 and the 4X800 relay, finishing in 11:21.77.

In the field events, Lauren Grotenhuis won the shot put with a toss of 27-10.75. She also won the discus with a throw of 60-06. Alyssa Gerritsma won the pole vault, clearing 8-00

BOYS TRACK

Holland Christian 95, Fruitport 42

Austin Brinks won the 400 in a time of 55.91. Parker Lambers won the 800 in a time of 1:58.61. Brinks came away on top in the 1600 with a time of 4:52.05 and Lambers won the 3200, finishing in 10:11.34.

Jordan Duncan won the 110 hurdles in a time of 16.95. The Maroons also won the 4X400 relay, crossing the line in 3:48.23. They also won the 4X800 in a time of 9:20.29.

Sam Knott won the shot put with a throw of 37-02.50. Malachi Stuive won the discus with a toss of 106-10. Duncan won the high jump, leaping 5-06.00. In the pole vault, Nathan Bengelink won with a vault of 9-06.00. Duncan also won the long jump with a distance of 19-07.50.
