Lee County Commissioner Brian Hamman is no longer the chairman and chief executive officer of the Greater Fort Myers Chamber of Commerce.

In a statement, Hamman said he decided to leave the job because his father is dealing with "serious health issues" that require his attention.

David Hamman is an electrical contractor and operator of Gator Electrical. A few years ago, Brian Hamman took over some duties at the family firm because of the illness of a sister.

Hamman had served as head of the Chamber of Commerce, which represents businesses in contacts with the community and local government, since July of 2022. At the time of his appointment, Hamman told The News-Press that he took the position because it "allows me to continue to build on the reason that I ran for commissioner and that is growing the business community, creating jobs and improving our qualify of life."

Hamman will be replaced as president on an interim basis by Jay Johnson, who serves as chairman of the chamber's board of directors. Johnson operates Bubba's Roadhouse in Cape Coral.

Hammon's resignation was effective immediately. He is in his third term as a member of the board of county commissioners. He will be up for reelection in 2026 and would not be able to run for another term in 2030.

The chamber represents about 700 businesses in the greater Fort Myers area.
