Hammondsport among nominees for historic preservation recognition

Hammondsport has been recognized as one of the destinations nominated for historic preservation, according to an announcement made by Governor Kathy Hochul.

The governor's office released a statement last week, revealing a total of 16 nominations for the State and National Registers of Historic Places. These nominations encompass various locations across the state, including a Puerto Rican house in New York City and the former home of early film pioneer Adam Kessel Jr. near Lake Champlain.

Among the selected locations is the Historic District of the Village of Hammondsport in Steuben County. This district boasts 450 architecturally intact resources spanning over 150 years, from 1823 to 1975. The historic homes within the village showcase a diverse range of architectural styles, from Victorian and Queen Anne designs to kit homes featuring American Foursquare design. Additionally, the village is home to the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum, named after the pioneering aviator who successfully tested the first seaplane in 1911.

Hochul emphasized the significance of these nominations, stating that they highlight New York's spirit of innovation, adaptation, and community building throughout generations, which continues to inspire us today.

The State and National Registers serve as the official lists of historically significant buildings, structures, districts, landscapes, objects, and sites in New York State and the nation. Currently, there are over 120,000 historic properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places throughout the state, either individually or as components of historic districts. The nominations were sponsored by property owners, municipalities, and organizations from communities across New York State.
