Hampton and Newport News schools announced on Friday afternoon they will participate in the Virginia High School League Fall season that began Feb. 4 and ends May 1. Football practices will begin Feb. 15 and the first football game is expected to be Feb. 26.

Competition cheer practice in those cities will also begin Feb. 15. Cross country, field hockey, golf and volleyball practices will begin on Feb. 22.

Newport News and Hampton schools are collaborating on their decisions whether to participate in sports during COVID-19 and both opted out of winter sports. With Newport News and Hampton on board, all 10 Peninsula District schools will participate in the Fall season.

Only Gloucester played winter sports among the 10 Peninsula District schools. Gloucester already announced it would participate in Fall sports as well.

The decision means all the athletic school district in Hampton Roads will compete in fall sports.
