LAS CRUCES, N.M. (KTSM) – Desirae Spearman was the best high school softball player in El Paso as a senior at Hanks in 2023. That skillset is already translating nicely to the collegiate level for New Mexico State.
In her first weekend with the Aggies, Spearman delivered in a big way, earning Conference USA Freshman of the Week honors after a fantastic opening weekend at NMSU, as the Aggies began the 2024 campaign with a 4-0 start.
Spearman played in the field and in the circle for the Aggies, showing the same dual-threat capabilities that she did at Hanks. She was phenomenal in her first two collegiate starts, tossing 13 innings without an earned run across two wins.
The true freshman pitched a complete game in her debut, striking out four while allowing just four hits in a 10-3 victory over Monmouth. Spearman followed it up with a gem in the weekend finale, punching out 10 over six innings in a 3-1 decision over Abilene Christian.
The two-way star impressed at the plate, going 4-11 (.364) at the plate with five RBI, a triple, a home run and a pair of stolen bases.
Spearman and the Aggies will host the Troy Cox Classic this weekend in Las Cruces.
