Hanover High School distributes 169 diplomas at commencement

HANOVER – Michael DeMayo did triple duty at Friday's Hanover High School graduation.

He gave the salutatorian address. As the president of the Class of 2023, he also gave a welcoming speech and School Superintendent Matthew Ferron played a recording of DeMayo declaring no school due to snow, something that didn't get used until a 90-degree afternoon in June because the Hanover schools had no snow days this school year.

"We tried" to find a reason for the unscheduled day off, Ferron said.

DeMayo said two related qualities can make someone special: humility and kindness. By an act of kindness, you can change someone's life, he said.

Practicing these two qualities, "you have the power to be someone great, someone special."

He also thanked those who helped the 169 members of the class during their school years, from school staff to family and friends.

"We made countless memories," he said.

Class valedictorian Daniel Nguyen said the members of the class also made a lot of mistakes along the way. He said that is part of the natural process and something that will continue now that their high school years are over.

"Despite those failures, we've made a lot of accomplishments," Nguyen said.

Ferron said the town is "incredibly proud" of each member of the graduating class.

As they leave the school and their hometown behind, Ferron said, "I want each of you to chart your own course."

Principal Matthew Mattos reminded the audience that last year he hid a $100 bill under the seat of one graduate, which sent many class members scrambling to look under their chairs.

"Got you all," he said.

Mattos told the graduates as they write the next chapter of their lives, "don't be a copy, be an original."
