Although a few community members and school board candidates expressed their support for the termination of Superintendent Charles Foust's contract, the New Hanover school board did not make it a topic of their discussion.

The New Hanover County Board of Education did not discuss the superintendent's contract during its meeting Tuesday.

And, after meeting in closed session for more than an hour, the school board decided to table discussion of the Career Readiness Academy at Mosley until the March 12 regular meeting.

Board member Pat Bradford said last week that she intended to make a motion to rescind Superintendent Charles Foust's contract extension. Since there was no discussion of his contract, it wasn't immediately clear Tuesday night why Bradford didn't introduce her motion.

Multiple members of the public, including candidates for New Hanover school board Natosha Tew and David Perry, gave the board their support for terminating the superintendent's contract.

"I think we're in a little bit of trouble," Tew said. "I think there's plenty of just cause to fire Foust."

Tew said she believes the board could fire Foust for his prior decision to close the Career Readiness Academy at Mosley without consulting the school board first.

School board candidate Tim Merrick said the board members should try to work more with Foust in regular meetings, rather than firing him because of the amount of money it would cost the board.

"He's done a lot of good and we need to recognize it, and hold him accountable," Merrick said when referring to Foust.
