A 40-year-old man was charged in connection to a stabbing that Friday morning at a Circle K near the Wilmington International Airport.

Willie Darnell Deramus was charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, carrying a concealed weapon, and a fugitive warrant out of Virginia for a similar incident, according to a post on the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office Facebook page.

Deputies responded to the convenience store, near the entrance to Wilmington International Airport at 2455 N. 23rd St., around 9 a.m. Friday. According to a news release from the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office, two men got into an argument inside the business, which led to the suspect swinging at the victim while holding a large knife. The knife struck the victim in the chest, resulting in a severe injury.

The victim was transported to Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center and is listed in stable condition.

The Sheriff's Office started an investigation after the incident. With help from the Wilmington Police Department through a joint unit called Mobile Field Force, deputies spotted a vehicle matching the description of the suspect around 4 p.m. Friday.

Deramus was apprehended and taken to the New Hanover County Detention Center, where he is being held without bail.
