An apparent emphasis by NFL officials to protect the quarterback has resulted in questionable roughing-the-passer penalties as of late, and former Cincinnati Bengals great Boomer Esiason was among those reacting via Twitter Monday night to the latest one: a call against the Kansas City Chiefs' Chris Jones as he sacked Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr and wrestled the ball away for a fumble recovery during the second quarter of "Monday Night Football" on ESPN.
ESPN color analyst Troy Aikman made a controversial remark on the air after the play.
"My hope is the competition committee looks at this in the next set of meetings, and we take the dresses off," Aikman said during the broadcast.
"I just think we've gone too far," Aikman added on "SportsCenter" after the game.
After the game, Jones told reporters he thinks roughing-the-passer calls should be able to be reviewed by officials, and he pointed out that a roughing-the-passer call on Sunday against the Falcons' Grady Jarrett on a third-down sack of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' Tom Brady cost Atlanta.

The NFL has announced a new rule that when a defensive player tackles the QB it is automatically roughing the passer.

Chris Jones just became the first player in NFL history called for roughing the passer while holding the ball.

This is not football anymore. I know we have to protect the QB but Chris Jones was recovering a fumble. We have gotten ridiculous with this.

One hand on the turf trying to break the fall. Other hand stripping the ball. No effort to rough the QB...the opposite. https://t.co/qH1yaAw7e5
