Years after depicting social-era concerns before they were conceivable, the iconic sci-fi drama "The Truman Show" turns 25 this month.

The 1998 film follows a man, played by comedian Jim Carrey, who finds out his entire life was being broadcast on live TV, and no one is who they claimed to be. The setting of the film was "Sea Haven," although it was actually shot in the Florida Panhandle's "Seaside."

Nearly three decades later, places within the tiny beach town that made it into the movie are still drawing attention from tourists today. Seaside's landmarks can be seen throughout the film, such as the Tupelo Street Gazebo and Coleman Tower.

One might wonder what other classic movies have the Sunshine State helped produce over the years. From A24 indie darlings to high-budget action movies, Florida has an array of films any snob would love to have in their growing collection.

Aside from the beloved "Truman Show," here are 13 of the top movies filmed in the state.

'Apollo 13' (1995)

Filmed on location, at least partially, at Kennedy Space Center, “Apollo 13” is Ron Howard’s gripping retelling of the near-disastrous 1970 attempt by NASA to return to the moon. Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, Bill Paxton, Gary Sinise, Ed Harris, and Kathleen Quinlan all turn in memorable performances, with Harris and Quinlan earning Oscar nominations.

'Armageddon' (1998)

Starring Liv Tyler, Bruce Willis, Ben Affleck, and Steve Buscemi, the space disaster movie was filmed in Brevard (again at Kennedy Space Center) in 1998. In the film, an oil-rig crew flies into space aboard a military space shuttle to destroy an asteroid headed for Earth.

'Caddyshack' (1980)

One of the most hilarious and quotable movies ever made, Harold Ramis’ slobs-versus-snobs classic “Caddyshack” – featuring killer comedic performances by Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield, Ted Knight, and Bill Murray – filmed its golf scenes at Rolling Hills Golf Club (now the Grande Oaks Golf Club) in Broward County, with the dinner scene shot at the Boca Raton Resort & Club.

'Doc Hollywood' (1991)

Shining a light on the hidden gem of Micanopy, Doc Hollywood tells the story of a young doctor (Michael J. Fox) who crashes his car on his way for a job interview cross-country and is sentenced to work for several days at the town hospital. The movie was mostly shot outside of Gainesville, inside the tiny Alachua County town.

'Edward Scissorhands' (1993)

Central Florida's Pasco County served as the pastel-colored backdrop for this Tim Burton film about a scissor-handed outcast clad in all black (Johnny Depp) who suddenly moves to the suburbs. Filmed in a subdivision called "Carpenters Run," the home still exists to this day, just not as bright as it appeared in the movie.

‘Scarface’ (1983)

Miami has never looked quite so eerily exotic or vicious as it does in Brian De Palma’s ultra-violent gangster epic about a Cuban immigrant (Al Pacino) determined to realize the American dream by any means necessary. In addition to Pacino's portrayal of Tony Montana, there also are strong performances by Michelle Pfeiffer and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio.

‘Spring Breakers' (2013)

Indie film provocateur Harmony Korine got his biggest budget and stars (including Selena Gomez, James Franco and Vanessa Hudgens) to date for this St. Petersburg and Sarasota-shot crime drama, and the results were surprisingly invigorating: a surrealistic collage of bright-colored bikinis, beer, bongs, and bullets.

‘Moonlight’ (2016)

Barry Jenkins’ drama following a Black man from Miami’s Liberty City neighborhood during three stages of his life took home the Best Picture Oscar in a historic surprise win and was later named the best film of the 2010s by IndieWire. It’s a deserving choice in both categories, combining life’s harsh realities with an aching romantic lushness, especially in its third act.

‘Magic Mike’ (2012)

Based on Channing Tatum’s time as a male stripper while living in Tampa, “Magic Mike” has become a pop culture icon in its own right with millions of theatre attendees packing theatres over the course of a decade to watch Tatum's story unfold over three movies. Hillsborough natives will recognize a few of the filming locations Tatum and costars visit in the original 2012 movie.

'Marvin’s Room' (1996)

‘The Florida Project’ (2017)

Considered an indie darling, Sean Baker’s film follows an impoverished community living in a motel on the outskirts of Walt Disney World, chronicling their struggles honestly but sympathetically. Along with some excellent child performances, it features a wonderfully warm turn by Willem Dafoe as the motel manager, earning a well-deserved Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination.

Cecil B. DeMille’s 150-minute circus epic was filmed in Ringling Bros.’ winter quarters of Sarasota, which later earned the Best Picture Oscar award in 1953. The technicolor spectacle showcases the dramatic lives of trapeze artists, a clown, and an elephant trainer told against a background of a circus performance.

'The Waterboy' (1998)

One of Adam Sandler's classic '90s comedies, the lighthearted sports story tells the story of a sheltered waterboy who nabs the position of a lineman on a football team. The movie is set in Volusia County's own Deland and DeBary, where residents can recognize key locations, such as Spec Martin Stadium and Highbanks Road boat ramp.
