Happy Thanksgiving, Pueblo! Here's what you'll find in our special Thanksgiving edition

The time of year in which we gather with loved ones to enjoy each other’s company while sharing a hearty and delicious meal and reflecting on all we have to be thankful for has once again arrived.

In the season’s spirit of gratitude, we at the Pueblo Chieftain have compiled some uplifting, interesting, and service-based stories in what is our biggest print edition of the year.

Chieftain education reporter James Bartolo checked in on Tom and Louie’s Cupboard, a longtime charity food drive that enlists the assistance of local high school kids to provide food for disadvantaged Pueblo families just in time for the holiday. James also looked into a fascinating project taking place at Pueblo Pioneer Cemetery, in which the cemetery association is seeking to unearth the mystery of just how many decedents are buried there.

Tracy Harmon, the Chieftain’s business reporter, spoke with local business owners about the upcoming Small Business Saturday on Nov. 25, including where to get the best deals and why it’s important for shoppers to buy local this holiday season. Tracy also worked with a local chef to put together a one-of-a-kind Pueblo chile stuffing recipe that’s sure to bring a Steel City kick to any Thanksgiving dinner plate.

For those of you who, like me, lose any semblance of self-control the second the clock ticks midnight on Thanksgiving and tend to gorge yourself into a borderline paralysis, Chieftain politics reporter Anna Lynn Winfrey compiled a list of quick and convenient hikes within a 15-minute drive of Pueblo to help you walk off that turkey dinner (or perhaps just digest enough for second or third helpings when the pies begin to be dished out.)

Big family celebrations or "Friendsgivings" also aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, so Chieftain public safety reporter Justin Reutter compiled a list of places in Pueblo where you can get a meal on the big day without having to spend hours preparing, and later cleaning, in the kitchen.

So as you gather with your loved ones and reflect on all you have to be thankful for this holiday, I hope these stories will serve some benefit, whether a practical one that informs your Thanksgiving plans or perhaps a spiritual one that provides some levity or inspiration.

All these stories can be found in the Chieftain’s special Thanksgiving edition, which publishes Wednesday, Nov. 22.

Because of the holiday, there will not be a print edition of the paper on Thursday, Nov. 23, but subscribers can check out the electronic edition at chieftain.com for stories, puzzles, comics and sports. Friday's newspaper will be delivered to print subscribers' homes.

Happy Thanksgiving, Pueblo. From all of us here at the Pueblo Chieftain.
