Johnson is the defending 1A state champion in girls golf. It's only natural that she'd play her way back to the state tournament again this year.

Still, what a way she did it in.

Johnson won the Region I-1A championship last week in style. Johnson finished the tournament with a final score of 149, including an even-par 72 on the second day. It was an impressive two-day run for the four-year golfer.

"This is the third time that she won the regional tournament and could have been the fourth time if not for the COVID year of 2020," Happy coach Barry Stevens said. "It was her best competitive two rounds. Her score is 11 strokes better than the next best by a girl who finished behind her at state last year. She is playing very confidently and concentrating on getting that repeat title. Hopefully she will be able to play two more good rounds at state."

You've heard of the phrase, "Batting a thousand" before, no doubt. You've also probably never seen anyone do it in real life. Yet, Claude had a kid that almost accomplished it.

Dawson Ensey came one hit shy of batting 1.000 as he went 11-for-12 last week. Those 11 hits included four doubles, a triple and a home run. Ensey batted in six runs, scored seven himself and stole four bases in an all-around impressive week.

"Dawson had a great week at the plate," Claude coach Gaeron Cooley said. "He came to the field prepared and ready to go. He had his last home game of his career this week and having never beat Wellington it had him ready to accept the challenge."
