Harbor Creek throwers, Seneca jumpers among stars at District 10 track and field meet

SLIPPERY ROCK – No paper was needed to wrap the early birthday present Hayden Mahoney received Saturday. The Harbor Creek senior gained a berth for the PIAA track and field meet a day before he turned 18.

That berth will be in the state's Class 3A boys discus competition. Mahoney claimed it as champion of that same event during District 10's track and field meet at Slippery Rock University.

Mahoney, who was seeded fifth in that event at 137 feet, 2 inches, watched his best attempt land at 152-3 on the soft soil of Mihalik-Thompson Stadium's throwing area. Slippery Rock's Seaton Wozniak, the favorite at 163-6, was second at 148-3.

"This is big," Mahoney said. "I didn't even make districts for this last year, but I went into (Saturday) with the mentality that I could win the whole thing. I spoke it into existence."

Mahoney recorded his mammoth personal best at the same facility where he expects to throw in college. He's awaiting paperwork to officially sign with Slippery Rock's track and field program.

Krahe sounded more excited about Mahoney's distict victory than his own.

"We go at it every day," Krahe said. "We're all very good. We've got a great team and we've got great coaches. You can't beat it, really."

Harbor Creek, which finished fourth in the 3A standings (89 1/2 points), also had a track winner in Max Dailey. The senior completed his lap in the 400 at 51.40 seconds to the 51.80 for second-place Jake Walden of Cathedral Prep.

Mattern's view of Shippensburg University's Seth Grove Stadium, where the PIAA meet is scheduled, will be significantly closer than the one he experienced last year.

"I had to watch (the meet) from home," Mattern said. "It'll be nice to be going there with a good team."Other Trojans who also will head to states as district champs are Benny Whitaker (200 at 23.12); Nicolin Pierce (800 at 2:00.50); and Christian Santiago (javelin at 176-2).

Anderson was the only athlete during Saturday's meet with a top-seeded time or distance that was better than an existing district record. His school record of 23-8 was better than the 3A long jump mark of 23-6 1/2 that Strong Vincent graduate Idris Cates continues to hold. Cates' record has held since 1994.

Bradon Schneider will wear Erie High's royal purple and yellow colors at states. The junior heads to Shippensburg as the district's 3A pole vault champ with a height of 13-9.

"It was a slow start," Schneider said, "but I put some things together and got (over on) that third attempt. I got over at 15 on my second attempt, but my standards weren't set correct. I know when I get to states that I can perform, and I'm really excited about that."

Seneca success

The Seneca Bobcats were in contention for the Class 2A boys team trophy until Grove City surpassed them over the closing events. The Eagles won with 118 points to Seneca's 96.

Bobby Yost was one of the Bobcats' four individual winners. The senior's best javelin throw was 162-5, which was five inches farther than the one for silver medalist Ethan Wiley of Mercer.
