CENTERPORT, NY — Dr. Lauren Gallagher, of Harborfields’ Washington Drive Primary School, was named the 2020 Frank Plumeau School Psychologist of the Year by the New York Association of School Psychologists (NYASP).

Each year, NYASP recognizes school psychologists and psychology graduate students at its annual awards ceremony. This year, due to the coronavirus pandemic, it shifted to a virtual conference so those worthy of awards were recognized for their dedication to the field.

With a background in special education, Gallagher learned the importance of connecting with students. Over the years, she has instilled in the district’s elementary school students a strong understanding of mindfulness and the importance of social emotional awareness. That work has only become more essential in the 2020-2021 school year as many students are learning to navigate new learning environments and teaching styles.

Gallagher, who is often referred to by her colleague as the "resident superhero," wrote: "My teaching experience showed me first-hand how hope and resilience can spring from heartache and despair when there is someone there who cares."
