Hardeeville woman dies after fall from golf cart in Margaritaville community, coroner says

A woman died in the hospital after falling out of a moving golf cart in Hardeeville’s Latitude Margaritaville development Saturday night, according to reporting from WJCL 22.

Cathy Hanks, 68, whose hometown was listed as Anderson, S.C., was pronounced dead at a Savannah-area hospital at 3:55 a.m. Sunday, according to Jasper County Coroner Willie P. Aiken. She was a passenger in the golf cart, he said. An autopsy and toxicology report will be completed Tuesday.

Hanks’ public social media profiles indicate she grew up in Honea Path, S.C. and lived in the Hardeeville area.

Crews from the Hardeeville Fire Department responded to the incident on Landshark Blvd. around 8:50 p.m. Saturday, said Deputy Chief Jonathan Bekemeyer. Due to the ongoing investigation, he said the department could not answer specific questions, such as whether the golf cart had crashed into another vehicle.

EMS teams took Hanks to the Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, where she died.

Latitude Margaritaville is a 55-plus “active living” community located off U.S. 278 in Hardeeville. The Jimmy Buffett-branded development opened in 2018 and will feature more than 3,000 living units across roughly 2,700 acres once expansions are completed.

This report will be updated as more information becomes available.
