Harley Quinn’s season three trailer is here and it’s just as whacky, gruesome, and gay as we could have hoped. The trailer sees the “BFF/GFFs” Harley Quinn (Kaley Cuoco) and Poison Ivy (Lake Bell) commence their “Eat. Bang! Kill. Tour” along with their motley crew of a chosen family including King Shark (Ron Funches) and Clayface (Alan Tudyk) — the latter of which gives director James Gunn a ride on his face by transforming into a vibrating chair.

While the plot is mostly still under wraps, “The mayhem and madness continue in season three... as ‘Harlivy’ strives to become the best version of themselves while also working towards Ivy’s long-desired plan of transforming Gotham into an Eden paradise,” according to the official logline.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly in 2020, showrunner Justin Halpern explained that Harley and Ivy’s love story wasn’t going to be swept under the rug, but rather explored more deeply in season three. “That’s the big thing for us to chew on,” Halpern said. “The thing we have discussed preliminarily is the idea that these two characters have had a lot of toxic relationships in their past. Although Ivy and Kite Man weren’t toxic, it also wasn’t an equal relationship, you know? He loved her a lot more than she loved him.”

But this relationship is very different for both women, he added. “So this is the first time they’re both going to be in a relationship where they really and truly have affection towards one another. They have a lot of responsibility. So I think like, ‘what is it like to be in a good relationship after you’ve only ever been in bad relationships with abusive people?’ is a big theme we want to play with.”

The audience will find out what exactly that means when the series returns with three new episodes Thursday, July 28 on HBO Max.
