Harmony sculpture debacle disturbing

It is frustrating that a group of people want to impose their tastes (or lack of it) on the entire country. Way back in the last century, I learned to read from the Dick and Jane books. I was happy to be able to read but I want today’s children to have access to books that are more diverse and interesting. In the last century, I was introduced to the art work of Norman Rockwell. I still enjoy his work, but I want to see the works of current artists. I want to broaden my horizons and knowledge of other cultures.

The sculpture, titled “Harmony,” scheduled to to be installed in Boynton Beach to “honor the power of music and its ability to bring people together” is being attacked as being “sexually enticing” and "satanic.” People making these claims must have wild imaginations or a simple desire to be ornery. The statue is holding a conductor’s baton and a musical note. I hope that the city’s Art Advisory Board will support this delightful sculpture.Barb Freed, Palm Beach Gardens

Remember on Grandparents Day

President Nixon made the first Sunday after Labor Day Grandparents Day. President Carter elevated it to a national holiday, feeling autumn the best time. Many of us in Palm Beach County share that proud honor. Please close your eyes and remember your grandparents. We pray that very warmth will be passed down to the next generation.

Google "September 10th" and discover the variety of poetry and books in honor of grandparents. An association exists just for grandparents and a wide assortment of trips may be shared with all generations in the family. What should you and your children plan for this upcoming holiday? Maybe a “nana” gram or a gramposaurus t-shirt. My grown grandchildren acknowledged my love of reading with The Little Free Library now placed right out front of my house. Grandparents, one more outstanding treasure awaits you — becoming a great-grandparents.

What would Greatest Generation think?

I have been thinking about my two great uncles, born in Vienna, Austria, who came to this country to escape Nazi hell. I have been thinking about my uncle, born in this country of immigrant parents who escaped Czarist Russian hell. These three young men enlisted in the army and fought to preserve democracy here and abroad. How many of your relatives did likewise? Most of the “Greatest Generation” is gone now. So many gave their lives on the beaches of Normandy and all over western Europe. It is fair to say that the condition of democracy in our country was far from perfect in those days. However, I can’t help but wonder what my relatives, and yours, would say and feel about the condition of our democracy today.
