Harney Elementary puts on 'Kindy 500'

May 24—All four kindergarten classes at Harney Elementary School put on their very own "Kindy 500" as the rest of the school cheered them on.

Kindergarten teacher Susan Geswein planned "the Greatest Spectacle at Harney" after seeing another school do it on Facebook.

"I like to go to the race myself," Geswein said. "We tried to hype it up the whole month of May and add in the little details that make it special. Some of them actually go to the race too."

Festivities kicked off with a parade of "cars" inside the school.

Nothing was left out in planning the mock Indianapolis 500.

Following the National Anthem and a recording of "Back Home Again in Indiana," racers lined up for the traditional "Racers, start your engines" command. Each class took a few laps around the track in their Flintstone-like "cars" and the winner would then move on to the final round and race against the winners from other classes.

After the four races, the four fastest students competed for the title. In true Indy 500 fashion, the final race ended in a photo finish. After a quick video replay, it was determined that Luke Knox was the first-ever Kindy 500 Champion at Harney Elementary.

Steven Rojas came in second, followed by Sophia Noland and Landon Jester. Up on the podium, Knox downed a carton of chocolate milk and then kissed a yard of fake bricks.

Next year, the festivities will be even bigger, Harney Principal Janet Dye said after the race.
