Harold V. Jones II wins fifth term in Georgia Senate district representing Augusta

Georgia state Sen. Harold V. Jones II won another term in the General Assembly, defeating Republican challenger Andrew Danielson in Tuesday's election by receiving 70.4% of the vote.

With all 60 precincts reporting, Jones received 40,614 votes and Danielson received 17,073.

“I’m just happy to win by one vote,” Jones said Tuesday evening. “Now, it‘s just time to get back to work, to be honest.”

Plans for his forthcoming term in Atlanta include forming a subcommittee to examine home health care “and how to get through all the red tape that exists,” he said, and to redraft a bill he authored addressing food insecurity that passed the Senate last year but stalled in the House.

For Jones, the victory is his fifth consecutive in the district, which includes most of the northern two-thirds of Richmond County. This election also marks the first time Jones had ever faced a Republican Senate opponent in a general election. The GOP didn't offer candidates for the seat when Jones ran in 2014, 2016, 2018 or 2020.

Jones, 53, is an Augusta attorney. He was elected Augusta's first Black solicitor general in 2004 and ran unopposed in 2008, but resigned the next year to seek an open state Senate seat later won by now-Mayor Hardie Davis Jr. Jones also ran unsuccessfully for a Georgia House of Representatives seat in 2002 and an Augusta Commission seat in 2012.

Danielson also is an Augusta attorney, who reported just $187.11 in total campaign expenditures, according to the Georgia Campaign Finance Commission. He could not be immediately reached late Tuesday.

The other state Senate seats in the Augusta-area legislative delegation remained uncontested. Sen. Max Burns of Sylvania retained District 23, which includes a portion of Columbia County in and around Grovetown. Sen. Lee Anderson of Grovetown retained District 24, which includes most of Columbia County.
