Harrisburg mall tenants must vacate today

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) — Tenants of the Harrisburg Mall must be out of the building by today.

In December, several received eviction notices saying they had to leave.

The reason they were told to vacate is because much of the mall is expected to be demolished.

These tenants have until 5 p.m. tonight to leave. Just in the last month, the owners — St. John Properties — shared their vision for a new mixed-use development with office, retail and dining space.

According to the Swatara Township planning commission, demolition permits have been issued to the mall’s owner. That work is expected to start in March.

The planning commission would also have to approve the redevelopment plans.

Some stores — including 2nd and Charles — told abc27 they did not receive eviction notices.

While abc27 has not heard from the property owners, a community member called the expected demolition, “A loss for the city.”

“It was a great mall when it first opened. We don’t have enough close to us as it is and a lot of the good stores that were out there [are] just not here,” Sonny Thomas, who has shopped at the mall since he was a child said.

Thomas also told abc27 that the mall was a gas saver for him — allowing him to shop without having to drive over to the West Shore.
