Harrisburg, Pierre golfers on top in state Class AA boys tourney

MITCHELL — Golfers from Harrisburg and Pierre got off to good starts Monday in the opening round of the state Class AA high school boys golf tournament at the Lakeview Golf Course.

Freshman Riley Christensen and sophomore Hayden Scott moved to the top of the individual leaderboard and helped Harrisburg grab a four-shot lead in the team standings with a 2-under 286 score, four shots better than Pierre.

Christensen fired a 4-under 68 to lead the individual standings by two shots over Scott and Pierre sophomore Nicklaus Bothun. Pierre sophomore Sawyer Sonnenschein and Harrisburg junior Parker Schultz each opened with 71s to round out the top five.

Christensen, Scott and Sonnenschein each tied for 13th last fall and Bothun tied for 28th.

Defending champion Jake Olson of Watertown shot a 5-over 77 that left him tied for 14th heading into Tuesday's final 18-hole round. O'Gorman's Radley Mauney, who was third a year ago, shot a 76 and is tied for ninth.

Harrisburg, Pierre, defending champion O'Gorman and Watertown were expected to battle for team honors and held the top four spots after the first day. O'Gorman, which shot 304, and Watertown, which shot 309, have some work today if they hope to catch either Harrisburg or Pierre. Host Mitchell is fifth at 311.

The final round is slated to start at 9 a.m. Tuesday.
