Harrisburg Town Leaders to decide on industrial landfill

HARRISBURG, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — The Town of Harrisburg Board of Adjustments will meet Tuesday to discuss allowing a local chemical company to put an industrial landfill on their property.

Venator Chemicals, located off Pharr Mill Road, asked town leaders if they could build an industrial landfill on their property back in 2022.

At that time, town leaders told them the landfill would not violate their current land use. However, more than a year later, town leaders reevaluated their decision and decided Venator would need a Special Use Permit for the landfill.

Venator appealed that decision, which is what the town’s Board of Adjustment will consider Tuesday evening.

The landfill would go on Venator’s property, adjacent to an existing sediment pond. The company said the pond currently contains sediment with a concentration of metals that can potentially mix into the groundwater.

Their plan would include lining the pond to avoid the sediments seeping into the groundwater. They say the landfill’s installation would come with a liner with nearby wells getting checked every two years to ensure contamination is not present.

Despite not being required to hold a public meeting, Venator offered neighbors the chance to ask questions in December.

Neighbors will also have a choice to let the board know their opinions about the landfill at Tuesday’s meeting. It starts at 6 p.m. at Harrisburg Town Hall.

A town spokesperson said the board is expected to vote on the landfill following the public hearing.
